Our Owner and Principal Consultant
Sam Gilbert, VMD
Dr. Sam Gilbert established Metro Preclinical Consulting, LLC, with nearly a decade of experience spanning the medtech and pharmaceutical industries as well as veterinary clinical practice. He received both his BSE in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics as well as his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (VMD) degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Gilbert pursued specialty training in veterinary surgery prior to moving into industry where he has developed expertise in preclinical research and generating data to support product development and regulatory approval of a diverse range of medical technologies. He has held roles in startups and corporations, most recently as Principal Scientist, Preclinical Surgeon at Ethicon, part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech.Â
Dr. Gilbert has particular interests in animal and surgical model development, strategically leveraging study endpoints to reduce redundant testing, and proactive engagement with regulators. He is a strong advocate for the judicious use of animals in preclinical research, having published on the 3R principles and striving to maximize data generation while minimizing animal numbers in studies.
